  • Glassblowing, a technique that involves blowing air into molten glass to create hollow objects, originated in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The craft spread throughout Europe and the Middle East, with the Roman Empire refining the techniques and introducing molds for mass production. Venice emerged as a major glassmaking center during the Medieval period, and in 1291, Venetian glassmakers were ordered to move their foundries to the island of Murano to protect trade secrets and prevent fires, leading to the birth of the legendary Murano glass.
